At Redbrick Academy, we believe that education is truly memorable when students can step inside the history they are learning about. Recently, we came together to observe a major global cultural event, Eid ul-Adha, through a blend of interactive learning and historical exploration.
Our goal was to give students a well-rounded understanding of the values behind this holiday while keeping our environment inclusive, engaging, and welcoming to all.
Experiential Learning:
To bring the holiday’s tradition to life, we hosted an interactive, practical simulation of the traditional journey associated with this time of year. Our students wore traditional attire and walked through a step-by-step recreation of the historical route.
This hands-on activity was a masterclass in experiential learning. Rather than just reading a book, students gained a practical, spatial understanding of the physical and geographical milestones involved in the tradition. This type of active participation fosters deep curiosity and team problem solving, helping students appreciate the dedication and scale behind major cultural landmarks.
Discovering the Backstory:
Beyond the practical activity, students spent time exploring the foundational narrative and historical significance of the occasion. We focused on the timeless backstory of why this event is recognised by millions worldwide, drawing out universal principles that resonate across all cultures:
- The Virtue of Sacrifice: Understanding the importance of putting the needs of the community above individual desires.
- Commitment and Perseverance: Learning how historical figures showed deep resilience when facing monumental tests.
- Generosity: Recognising the tradition of sharing resources and supporting those who are less fortunate.
By exploring these concepts, students practise critical thinking, reflecting on how they can demonstrate integrity and kindness in their daily lives.
A Celebration of Unity:
The event concluded with an Eid Party, bringing our student body together for an afternoon of community and connection. In an increasingly interconnected world, developing cultural literacy is essential.
By taking a structured, educational approach to this significant milestone, Redbrick Academy continues to offer a safe space where students can understand global heritage, share experiences, and learn the value of mutual respect in a diverse society.
We are incredibly proud of the enthusiasm, maturity, and respect our students demonstrated throughout this special occasion.
